About Susan

I am experienced BACP accredited counsellor and a supervisor to both trainee and qualified counsellors. My supervision practice reflects my counselling style which is predominantly person centred but I also use other approaches where appropriate. I offer a regular space and time to think about your work and relationships with your clients. We can work together to look at issues that arise such as separating out our own stuff, monitoring our own self-care, over involvement with clients and other ethical dilemmas. I aim to offer a warm, non-judgemental environment where supervisees can safely bring their successes as well as worries.

Finding the right supervisor for you can take time and the supervisory relationship
is usually a long term partnership. I therefore offer a free initial session by phone or zoom, where you can tell me about your work, level of experience, placement if iin training, and type and number of clients that you see. We can look at what you
would like from supervision and I can answer any of your questions.

Once we have agreed to work together my costs are £60 per hour, £45 per hour for counsellors in training. I work online and face to face.

Background

Sometimes it is hard to talk to friends or family about what you are going through and how it makes you feel. The advice given, though well meant, can be confusing, perhaps because it is coming from people who are too close and trying to ‘fix ’things. Or you may feel that you are a burden and not want to share your worries with them.

The counselling room creates a safe place to offload. It is a place to get a different perspective; to regain some lost strength and to gain a better understanding of where you are now and be more at peace with making positive choices for the future with someone who cares and won’t judge you.

My approach is to use common sense and is simple. I follow you and your needs, working alongside you in a considered and confidential way, listening carefully, reflecting back and clarifying any confusion. This counselling process helps establish feelings of safety, supporting you to deal with the things that need to be changed and to come to terms with those that can’t.

Alongside my private practice I have worked as a counsellor for a bereavement charity, a family mediation organisation, in schools and young people's homes.

It is well documented that the key to successful therapy is the good relationship between therapist and client. I recommend an initial free phone call to talk through how I work and answer any questions that you may have, so that you can decide if I am the right person for you to work with.

About the work

I work with young people, adults and couples. I offer clinical supervision for counsellors, both qualified and in training.

I have undertaken extra training with NCFED and EDDE in order to work safely with people with disordered eating.

The number of sessions is up to you as the client. Sometimes up to six sessions is enough to make a difference, finding some tools and coping strategies to take into everyday life. Medium and long term counselling allows us to work in more depth.
